Tokyo Style: Keeping An Eye On Fashion In Japan

Japan Tokyo style fashionAre you a slave to fashion? I’m not, but I do like to people-watch. And, Tokyo is a great city for doing just that. I can spend an hour or two at a café with outdoor seating just watching people go by in places like Shibuya, Shinjuku, or Ikebukuro. Of course, attractive girls will always get my attention first, but I do like to check out the latest styles that guys and girls sport here.

If you’re into strange and unique styles, you probably like to check out Harajuku from time to time. If you’re all about mainstream fashion, you’re more likely to hit places like Omotesando or even Ginza. Personally, I’m a jeans and light shirt kind of guy. Most of the time, I get my stuff at UniQlo. Sure, some of my Japanese friends tell me to get with it and don something trendier and more fashionable, but I just can’t help but laugh at the way I look when I try to do so. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent years doing it simple, or maybe it’s because I just don’t have the body and looks for it. Either way, I’m happy just being who I am (I try not to look like a total slob, mind you) and have no time for people who judge others based on their fashion sense. But, to give most of the Japanese people I know credit, they don’t judge people that way, anyway. Sure, some of them might spout off a kanji waruiiii! once in a while, but it’s usually all in fun.

Anyway, if you’re into what’s hot in Japan fashion, especially Tokyo styles, check out Tokyo Street Style, a style blog dedicated to the latest and greatest Tokyo looks. It does have English, but it’s a little hard to understand sometimes. Either way, the pics will likely get most of your attention.

  1. Japan Street Styles - In Fashion…

What do you think about the latest in men’s and women’s fashions in Japan? Do you sport the latest styles? Have a look at the latest….

  2. I have to admit that I am not a fashionista but I do like some of the Japanese fashions for women, men not so much. However, many of them just look silly on Gaijin. I did break down and pick up some leggings and a long blouse at UniQlo though and it’s comfortable to wear and I think it’s cute.

  3. I can’t stress how much i love most of the girls fashion in Japan but as for the blokes stuff i’m not quite as enthusiastic. It’s all a little too cheesy rock’n'roll the stuff the blokes out at Shibuya and Kabukicho get around in and not something i’d care to try and pull off anyway ….. gaijin wearing most of the Japanese fashion is a tall order.

As for me, i dress for the occasion but prefer casual these days … and thankfully in Japan there’s no such thing as a dress code that we had back in Melbourne.

I hear you about the girls’ fashions here in Japan, Neil. Like I said, I could spend hours sipping coffee and watching them stroll by on a sunny afternoon in Shibuya or Aoyama.

  4. I think I’d have gone back home by now if it weren’t for Uniqlo.

    Clement,
You can find UniQlo stores everywhere in Major metropolitan areas throughout Japan.

Here’s a link to their website’s store locator page: http://www.uniqlo.com/jp/shop/#

  6. I’m with Tom. My fashion sense for casual wear starts and stops at Uniqlo. I like The Gap in America, but it’s too pricey here.

  7. Fasion will continue to change just like technology. The question is, can you keep up in the fast paced changing environment?

  8. Fashion is always interesting in Tokyo. It is fun to go to Harajuku, buy a few beers cans of beers and sit in the park and people watch.

As for my own fashion…I tend to keep to a greaser style which never really goes out of style.
