By billywest • Jun 8th, 2008 • Category: Japan News
Tokyo Metro will start regular operation of its new Fukutoshin line tomorrow (Saturday the 14th). This new subway line connects Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya as well as stations in north Tokyo and south Saitama. The commute between Ikebukuro and Shibuya will be 16 minutes by local train and 11 minutes by express train. This is a great new addition to the Tokyo transportation system and will relieve overcrowding of Yamanote line trains. For more information, check out the Tokyo Metro website (Japanese).
Tokyo’s Largest Cineplex To Open In Shinjuku On July 19
The largest cineplex in Tokyo is set to open its doors on July 19th. The total seating capacity for the entire cinema complex will be 2237, with the largest auditorium able to seat 607 people. There will be 10 screens and the name of the complex will be Shinjuku Picadilly. Oh, god! What’s with these names of buildings in Tokyo these days? I mean, the new Tokyo Tower has been given the name ‘Tokyo Sky Tree.’ A lame name for what looks to be a slick-looking tower.
Osaka Man Gasses Self To Death, Nine Police Officers Sickened
A man gassed himself to death in Osaka today causing 14 people to fall ill due to exposure to the deadly gas. Nine of the sickened people were police officers. Apparently, the man had just finished himself off as police were attempting to raid it in relation to a fraud case that occurred in Kyoto in March. Talk about strange timing… One can only guess at this point as to whether or not the man who committed suicide was the same man who committed the act of fraud.
Tokyo Police Officers Forfeit Their Careers
In two recent cases, a couple of Tokyo police officers were busted for criminal acts, and one has been fired so far. In the first case, a sergeant with the Metropolitan Police Department was nabbed for using his position of authority to enter a women’s restroom at a local park. He stated to suprised patrons that he was on official business, but was reported by some junior high school girls anyway.
In the second case, a senior police officer was arrested and fired for using a credit card stolen from his co-worker to purchase a computer an Osaka Prefecture electronics store.

So a cop steals a coworkers CC and thinks he could get away with it??
What a burn-out!!
I hope that guy doesn’t have kids. I would hate to think he passed that defective gene on.

Monday’s commute sucked, apparently. When I was on the Yamanote Line bound for Ikebukuro, the display showed that Fukutoshin Line was delayed due to crowding. Everybody wanted to be on the first Monday ride, I guess. Yamanote Line was crushed, and you needed a snorkel to breathe, as usual.

So the Fukutoshin sen is a new thing. I regularly use the Den-en-toshi line to commute to the Suzukakedai campus of Tokyo Tech. I guess this line is under the Tokyu Den-en-toshi station at Shibuya. I noticed it just recently.
