Goodbye To A Legend: Japan Off-Topic

Each of us has in mind different famous people (usually only a handful) who when they die, it hits hard. Sometimes we see these people getting older and we think to ourselves, Man, when this person passes away, it’s gonna suck. For me, George Carlin was one of these people.
George Carlin was a brilliant stand-up comic, and whether you loved or hated the childlike way he approached dark humor, or his biting, sarcastic delivery, you have to admit that the guy had brains. Even up until as recently as last weekend, he was performing and was as sharp as ever.
I was in my early teens when I discovered Carlin and I have to admit I didn’t fall in love with his humor right away. But, as I got a little older and became a bit cynical about the world, I started to recognize his genius. Of course, he was a pioneer before I was born, influencing a Supreme Court decision regarding obscenity and broadcasting as well as setting the standard for irreverent stand-up comedy in the 70’s.
His monologues on sports and the stupidity of people in general, always did me in. Even though some parts of his performances could leave me silent, when he got going and really hit his bitter, crude stride, I was constantly wiping tears of laughter from my eyes and sometimes was left absolutely breathless, near the point of vomiting from laughing so hard. I guess the performances will still be funny on DVD, but knowing that the mind that put forth all that brilliant material is gone will somehow change it for me a little. At least, I think it will. I’ll have to go on You Tube tonight and see.
Anyway, I just want to say, thank you, George. The moments of laughter you gave me were priceless.
A little George for ya. Warning: Not the nicest language here

Goodbye To A Legend: George Carlin…
Don’t hate me for posting something not Japan-related because I think there are some Carlin fans living here in Japan. Anyway, I’ll miss the guy….
